Everything happened so fast that I was on the verge of a mental breakdown. At this time, John grabbed a broken wine bottle and forced me into a corner. He seemed like a different person, glaring at me with blood – shot eyes and grinding his teeth. “You… you poisoned my wife!” I cowered in the corner, not daring to move. Besides being shocked, I was also extremely scared. I timidly pleaded, “How could I poison your wife? We have no grudges…”

Just then, I suddenly saw a sly glint in John’s eyes. I trusted my intuition and judgment. I’d fallen into a trap, a deep and big one with many twists and turns. All the chaotic memories rushed back to me: John used pre – arranged menus to guide me and gradually got closer to me; he always led me to places where there was no one and always took the menus back, leaving no evidence; he always made me loudly announce that these dishes were recommended by me… How could I explain all this to the police? I was a menu advisor and had received red envelopes from him. How could I explain these red envelopes? There was no one to testify for me!

A smug glint flashed in John’s eyes. He sneered and said, “Everyone saw that the dish you recommended to my wife was poisoned. You watched her being poisoned right in front of your eyes. This is the fact!”

What else could I say? I just waited for the police to come and arrest me. I was completely desperate!

“How do you know the dish is poisoned? How do you know I was poisoned?” Suddenly, a hoarse female voice came from beside me. I opened my eyes wide and saw that in the midst of the screams, Lisa actually slowly stood up from the table. She wiped the sweat from her forehead with a handkerchief and gave John a cold look. John never expected this situation. His hand trembled, and the wine bottle fell to the ground, making a crisp sound…

Lisa glanced at the broken wine bottle on the ground and said to John sarcastically, “Our marriage is like this wine bottle. You’ve broken it mercilessly!” John immediately put on a smiling face and said, “It’s good that you’re okay. I thought…” Lisa glared at him fiercely and said, “You’ve been waiting for this day for a long time, haven’t you? I admire your scheming skills, but you forgot that I was a stage actress. It’s easy for me to pretend to be poisoned.”

The police came in and quickly controlled the situation. Lisa came up to me and said, “John planned all this. I’m very sorry for scaring you, sir.” I murmured, “Why involve me?” Lisa said, “Actually, I knew John would do this sooner or later. He wanted me to die quickly, but he miscalculated. I’m actually the real mastermind behind this.” I was stunned and stared at her. Lisa sneered and said, “I deliberately put a book in our living room. There was a sentence in it: ‘Never take a large amount of vitamin C while eating shrimp, or it will produce trivalent arsenic and cause death quickly.’ He saw this sentence and thought about it many times. He thought this method was simple and easy. If he planned it well, he wouldn’t be suspected at all.”

I didn’t know what to say and just listened as Lisa continued, “I got rheumatism from performing outdoors in the early years, so I rarely go out. Today, he used our wedding anniversary as an excuse to get me out and tried to trick me into taking a large amount of vitamin C in advance. I’ve been married to him for twenty years, and I know how to lead him on. He was just a street hooligan back then, and his weaknesses haven’t changed. He likes to play smart, take risks, and has a strong sense of luck.”

I interrupted Lisa angrily and coldly asked, “I’ll ask again – why involve me?”

Lisa smiled and said, “I need a witness. It could be you or someone else. Anyway, I need someone to prove John’s guilt!” After Lisa finished speaking, we all followed the police out. She turned back to me and said, “Only you can piece together all the details of John’s plan and tell the police.”

I walked with my head down, feeling numb. I wondered if this outcome could be considered my good fortune.
