Flying as a Butterfly chapter 3
by Jason StewartAs soon as they stepped into the house, the old woman suddenly slammed the door shut. There was no electric light in the house, only a candle on the table was flickering. By the dim candlelight, they found that there were many butterflies in the house, flying in groups and pairs. They couldn’t tell which pair was the one that flew in. When the old woman saw them staring at the butterflies, she said, “You’re not here to buy more, are you? I only sell one pair to each couple.”
Tom didn’t answer as he was looking at the butterflies in the room. He was just wondering why these butterflies seemed so real and could fly freely. Before he could ask, the old woman said, “You must be wondering why these butterflies can fly.” They nodded. The old woman smiled mysteriously and suddenly opened a door, saying, “Take a look and you’ll know.”
They stood in front of the door and saw a thick fog. Only then did they realize that there was a cliff just a few steps outside. They heard the old woman say coldly behind them, “Do you know? Those butterflies aren’t ordinary toys. They’re alive because they were once people!” Then she suddenly pushed Tom. Tom felt a sway and fell out. Lily let out a scream and quickly reached out to grab him. Their hands clasped together, but her body was also pulled out, and she was only holding onto the edge of the cliff with one hand.
The old woman stood above and sneered, “I didn’t expect you to be so infatuated!” Lily shouted, “Even if we die, we’ll die together!” “Okay, then I’ll grant your wish!” With that, the old woman pried Lily’s hand off the cliff, and they fell.
Tom felt his body falling continuously. He struggled desperately. After an unknown amount of time, he suddenly felt his body become light and started flying upwards slowly. Looking back, he found that a pair of red wings had grown on his back. At this time, he felt himself being grabbed by a big hand, and the old woman’s voice came from his ear, “Now you know why those butterflies can fly. They were once people like you.” Before Tom could react, he felt a rope being tied to his foot. Then a yellow butterfly appeared in front of him. Looking closely, it was Lily.
He wanted to shout but couldn’t make a sound. The old woman sneered and said, “I didn’t expect there to be such infatuated lovers who are willing to die together. You’re just like the legendary lovers now. What else can you ask for?” Then she tied the other ends of the two strings to a pillar and left.
They hugged each other and shed tears. They knew that in a few days, they would be sold as toys to other people by the old woman.
They wanted to fly away, but the strings tied to them restricted their flight. In desperation, Tom’s eyes suddenly fell on the candle on the table, and he had an idea.
