The Box Sent by the Devil chapter 3
by Helen HallThe Devil’s Temptation
Early the next morning, Arthur went to work first. Before leaving home, Norma picked up the two pieces of the business card from the trash can and put them in her pocket. After lunch at the company, Norma found a deserted place and glued the business card back together. She couldn’t believe what she was doing.
Around 5 p.m., Norma finally dialed Stand’s number. “I’m really curious, Mr. Stand.” Stand’s extremely pleasant voice came from the other end of the phone. “It’s quite natural.”
Hearing this, Norma’s face flushed. She angrily scolded, “Don’t think I believe your nonsense. I just want to know what you mean by saying that someone somewhere in the world will die?”
Stand replied softly, “To be exact, that person could be anyone. The only thing I can guarantee is that you don’t know or understand that person. Also, you don’t have to face his death in person. Then you can get one hundred thousand dollars. Do you need the key now?” There was a special charm in Stand’s words.
“Rubbish!” Norma hung up the phone at once.
After work, Norma found the envelope lying in front of her door. She thought, “I won’t touch it, let alone take it in.” She deliberately stepped over the envelope and went in to cook. But she found she couldn’t focus on cooking. After a while, Norma opened the door again, took the envelope in and put it in the bottom drawer of the cabinet.
When Arthur came home from work, Norma had changed her mind countless times. Finally, she decided to be straightforward. “I want to try the button, dear.” Arthur looked at his wife in shock. “You’re crazy! That’s murder!”
Norma looked at her husband calmly, with determination in her eyes. “I just want to try. That person might be far away. What does it matter to us? You know, with one hundred thousand dollars, we don’t have to work so hard. We can start a small business. Our fate might change.”
Arthur impatiently interrupted Norma. “Stop talking. Anyway, it’s murder. We’ll have money, just a matter of time.”
