### Blind but Wise

John had long planned the details of collecting the money. He sent Jones and Gurita to pick up the money. After they left, John brought some food and wine, put them on the table, unlocked George’s handcuffs, and smiled sinisterly: “Young man, have something to eat – this is your last meal.”

George’s face changed drastically. He stared at John with his empty eye sockets and pointed at him, saying, “You’re going back on your word? Do you want to kill me?”

“Your father doesn’t know who I am, but I might as well tell you. Because your father fired me, I lost my job. Then my wife divorced me, and I went to prison for robbery and was locked up for two years. It’s all your father’s fault. If I don’t kill you, how can I vent my anger? Blame your father.”

The more John talked, the more excited he became. He took out his gun and pointed it at George’s head. George’s face turned pale and his body trembled. Seeing him like this, John felt extremely excited and burst into laughter. At that moment, George suddenly grabbed John’s gun – holding hand and slammed it on the table. John felt a sharp pain in his hand, and the gun almost flew out of his hand. George then suddenly lowered his head and rammed his head into John’s face. John let out a scream and fell backward. George turned around, accurately picked up the baseball bat that John had placed against the wall, and started hitting John wildly while shouting. After being hit once, John rolled on the ground, reached for his pistol. Just as he raised his hand to aim at George, unexpectedly, the bat in George’s hand seemed to have eyes and hit John’s arm. The gun flew out again. John endured the pain and lunged at the gun. George took a big step forward, kicked the gun to the other side, and at the same time, swung the baseball bat down again.

John let out a series of screams and almost lost the ability to fight back. He crawled out of the room in a hurry. He hadn’t gone far when George shouted and chased after him. John suddenly thought that the reason George could hit him accurately was that blind people usually have sensitive ears and could hear the sounds he made. Thinking of this, John suddenly stood still and held his breath. George still shouted and rushed forward. Just as he was about to pass by John, John was secretly happy when George suddenly turned around, and the baseball bat magically hit John’s head. Poor John had absolutely no way to dodge. He only had time to raise his hand to block, and with a “crack”, his arm was broken. Then George hit his knee with the bat. John knelt on the ground, in great pain. George was still shouting. While shouting, he took off his coat, tore it into strips, and tied John up as if he could see. Then he searched John’s pocket for a mobile phone and called the police.

A few minutes later, the police arrived and arrested John and his accomplices, Jones and Gurita. John knew that this prison sentence would be very long. In remorse, he racked his brains but still couldn’t understand: George was clearly blind, so why did he seem to be able to see everything?

On the day of the trial, Smith brought George to the court. This time, George wore big sunglasses. He didn’t need Smith’s help at all and walked to his seat like a normal person. After the verdict was announced, George gave John a cold smile, got up, and was about to leave with Smith. John felt like he was going crazy. Suddenly, he shouted, “George, your eyes aren’t blind at all. Smith, you bastard, you fucking lied to me…”

The police rushed up to hold him down, but he still kept shouting. George turned around and laughed loudly. While laughing, he walked up to John, took off his sunglasses. John could clearly see that there were only two black holes in George’s eyes. He said softly, “To tell you the truth, my eyes are really blind. My father didn’t lie to you. But do you know how bats and dolphins see things? They use ‘echolocation’. I’m the same. I can make sounds with my tongue and then identify the position of objects through the echoes. When you caught me, weren’t you surprised that I kept muttering to myself? At that time, I knew the layout of the room and the position of the baseball bat through the echoes.”

John was stunned. George continued, “I started learning echolocation at school when I was five. In this aspect, I might be the best – learned blind person in the world. If you had taken the ransom and let me go, I might not have dared to resist. But since you wanted to kill me, I had no choice but to fight you. You can only blame your own vicious heart.”
