Kindness

At that time, Jack’s mother and the uncle were childhood sweethearts and had a very good relationship. Later, they often met in this forest. The uncle always carved marks on the trees so that Jack’s mother could find him easily. If it weren’t for Jack’s father’s appearance, they might have become a happy couple.

At that time, Jack’s father worked in the county town, which was a very honorable thing. He also took a fancy to Jack’s mother. Every time he came back, he always had a few packs of good cigarettes in his pocket. Jack’s grandfather liked smoking. Whenever Jack’s father saw him, he would respectfully offer him cigarettes. Gradually, Jack’s grandfather didn’t think much of the uncle anymore. He said to Jack’s mother more than once, “What’s so good about him? He doesn’t even know how to smoke or drink. A man like this will never amount to anything in his life.”

After saying this many times, Jack’s mother was also tempted and gradually became cold to the uncle. When Jack’s parents got married, the uncle cried bitterly and lay in bed for three days and three nights without eating or drinking. After getting up, he became a bit dull – witted…

Hearing this, Jack was a little dazed. He composed himself and asked his mother, “Then what you just said… the second time he saved me?”

Jack’s mother wiped away her tears and continued in Jack’s puzzled gaze.

“A year after I married your father, one night, it suddenly started to rain heavily, and a flash flood broke out. The terrain of our hometown was low and was likely to be flooded. At that time, your father was not at home, and I was pregnant with you, so it was inconvenient for me to move. Just at the critical moment, your uncle rushed in, picked me up, and ran. When he carried me to a safe place and went back to get some daily necessities, the house collapsed. A roof beam hit the back of his head and knocked him unconscious on the spot. Later, he was rescued by others, but he became like this after waking up…”

Jack was stunned. He never expected that this was how the mentally – challenged uncle came to his home…

“He became like this because of us. We owe him so much that we can never pay it back in our lifetime. How can we treat him badly and let him suffer again?” Jack’s father said as he helped the uncle to leave.

Jack suddenly woke up as if from a dream. He quickly stepped forward and said, “Uncle, my dear uncle. Let me carry you on my back, okay?” He bent down, carried the uncle on his back, and walked steadily out of the forest step by step…
