My Darling Silly Uncle chapter 1
by Amanda VillanuevaDiscarding
There is a highway over – limit checkpoint on Ling Mountain. Jack is a staff member at the checkpoint. He is serious and responsible in his work and very enthusiastic, but the passing drivers have the most complaints about him. What’s going on? The problem lies with his uncle. Jack’s uncle is a mentally – challenged man who is extremely fond of smoking. He often goes to the over – limit checkpoint to ask drivers for cigarettes. After a while, he has become quite picky and won’t smoke cigarettes that cost less than 10 dollars. He only wants good ones.
Some drivers have even come up with a catchphrase: “To cross Ling Mountain, you have to pass two hurdles. One is to pay the fine, and the other is to offer good cigarettes.”
In fact, Jack is very annoyed. This mentally – challenged uncle is not his real uncle. His parents brought this mentally – challenged man home from somewhere. When Jack was a child, he once asked his parents where the mentally – challenged uncle came from and why they were so nice to him. They always said, “You’re still young. You won’t understand.”
Every time the mentally – challenged uncle comes to the checkpoint, Jack tries to drive him away. But if he is a little careless, the uncle will come back again, leaving Jack at a loss.
One day, the checkpoint stopped several overloaded trucks. Just after dealing with them, a few people got out of a car parked by the road. It turned out to be a joint inspection team sent by the provincial government to crack down on the “three kinds of chaos” on the roads. The team leader looked at Jack and said, “I heard there is also a ‘cigarette checkpoint’ here. We’ve observed for a while, and it’s really true…”
Jack’s face flushed instantly. Just then, he also saw the mentally – challenged uncle asking for cigarettes again, but he was too busy to drive him away.
The team leader said meaningfully, “Our staff not only have to manage themselves well but also their family members, even if they have mental problems… Otherwise, small things can bring about great negative impacts.”
At that moment, Jack was so ashamed that he wished he could dig a hole in the ground and hide. After the incident, Jack was severely criticized by the station master. The station master said that if he didn’t manage his mentally – challenged uncle well, Jack might have to think about his job.
After coming out of the station master’s office, Jack was so angry that he locked the mentally – challenged uncle in his office. He didn’t open the door until he got off work. He said to the uncle, “Come on, ride my motorcycle. I’ll take you to a good place where there are lots and lots of cigarettes.” Hearing that there would be cigarettes, the uncle happily got on the motorcycle. Jack stepped on the accelerator and sped towards the wilderness. He had secretly made up his mind to take the uncle far away and abandon him.
The uncle sat on the motorcycle, laughing happily. When Jack drove a little faster, he shouted, “Jack, slow down. Don’t fall off.”
After driving along the highway for a while, Jack turned onto a dirt road. After bumping on the dirt road for half an hour, the sun was setting, and a railway track appeared in front of them.
“I want to see the train, choo – choo…” the uncle shouted randomly. Jack stopped the motorcycle, and the uncle jumped off and ran over. He lay there, putting his ear on the track, and excitedly shouted, “I can hear the track rumbling. The train is coming…”
“Choo – choo -” The whistle of the train came from afar. Jack came up with an idea: First, take the uncle to the other side of the track. After the train passed, he could ride his motorcycle away. So he lied to the uncle that it would be clearer to watch the train from the other side of the railway and led him over. Jack also gave the uncle a flashlight, which he had prepared before leaving, so that the uncle wouldn’t fall into a ditch when walking at night.
The railway track creaked, and the train was getting closer. Jack quickly walked back. There was a railroad switch at this part of the track. When Jack walked to the switch, accidentally, his left foot got stuck tightly in the switch.
The train was rumbling towards him. It was very dangerous if he didn’t pull his foot out. But the more panicked he was, the harder it was to pull it out. The train was getting closer and closer. Jack could already see the white – smoking locomotive. He closed his eyes in despair… Suddenly, he heard a strange cry. Jack opened his eyes: It was the uncle! He saw the uncle shouting strangely and running towards the train…
With a harsh braking sound, the train finally stopped dozens of meters away from Jack, and the locomotive almost touched the uncle. Jack broke out in a cold sweat. He squatted down and took a closer look. It turned out that his shoelace was entangled in the railroad switch. He quickly exerted force and pulled his foot out of the shoe.
