Love Lies chapter 1
by Matthew SmithThe door of a hospital ward in the Fifth City Hospital was gently pushed open, and an old man carrying a blue cloth bag walked in. His hair was snow – white, and his thin face wore a smile. He walked up to an old woman lying semi – reclined in the bed. The old woman had a sallow complexion and looked extremely tired. When she saw the old man, a glimmer of light flashed in her eyes.
The old man sat down on the square stool beside the bed and softly asked, “How are you feeling this morning?” The old woman moved her body with some difficulty and replied, “Not bad. I got an injection.” “That’s good,” the old man said as he took out a lunch box from the blue cloth bag and opened it. He handed the lunch box to the old woman, stood up to help her sit up straight, then took out a stainless – steel spoon from his left coat pocket, wiped it on his lapel, and gave it to the old woman, whispering, “Eat.”

The old man waved his hand and said, “You’ve been cooking for me for half a lifetime. Now that I’m retired, I’ll cook for you. Well, no matter what happens in the future, we’re even. Besides, I’m much healthier than you.”
The old woman scooped up a spoonful of porridge and was about to put it to her mouth when she suddenly remembered something. “Hey, how’s Lily doing?”
An excited look immediately appeared on the old man’s face. “I almost forgot if you hadn’t mentioned it.” He took out a letter from his pocket and handed it to the old woman. “This girl doesn’t make phone calls, just writes letters. She’s doing great!”
The old woman took the letter, unfolded it, and softly read it word by word:
