Taking Out a Pistol

Tom was in a bind. He didn’t dare to go to Chicago at all. So, he lowered his head and tried to soften his tone. “Ma’am, I thought you were joking when I said I’d take you. In fact, it’s such a long way. I’m really not brave enough. You’d better find another car.” After saying that, he returned the money to the woman. But the woman wasn’t having it. She demanded that Tom pay her double, another $10,000 as compensation.

Even though Tom was usually a patient man, he couldn’t help getting furious. He shouted at the woman, “Are you trying to extort me? This is New York! I’m not taking you. What can you do about it?”

Hearing Tom’s words, the woman didn’t say a word. She silently opened her handbag, took out a pistol, and then took out a delicate white handkerchief to wipe the gun carefully.

Looking at the black pistol, Tom felt a chill run down his spine. His voice trembled as he said timidly, “Ma’am, could you please point the gun away? If it goes off, I’ll be dead.” The woman ignored him and continued to wipe the gun, saying, “I’m going to Chicago. Do you understand?”

Of course, Tom understood. He thought this woman must be a criminal. If he really angered her, he’d lose his life. It seemed that he could only look for an opportunity to escape on the way. With this in mind, Tom started the car and set off.

The journey was silent. They drove on the expressway. Tom drove like crazy, ignoring all the speed limits. Normally, he wouldn’t have dared to drive like this for fear of getting caught by the traffic cameras and getting huge fines. But now, he actually hoped to be caught by the cameras so that the police would come after him and he could be saved. But for some reason, usually the police would catch up with him soon after he exceeded the speed limit, but today, none of the police bothered him.

During the journey, the woman didn’t make things too difficult for Tom. Only when they passed by a highway toll booth would she get nervous and gently press the pistol against Tom’s stomach. Tom had an idea of deliberately ramming the toll – booth equipment and then shouting for help, but with the cold pistol pressing against him, he had to give up.

As hours passed, Tom became more and more scared, while the woman was very relaxed. After passing a highway toll booth, she pushed the backrest of her seat all the way back until it was almost flat like a bed. She lay back and said, “Don’t look around or turn back. Just keep driving straight ahead.” Tom thought, this was the end. She could see him, but he couldn’t see her. All his actions were under her watch. Even if she closed her eyes and slept, as long as she didn’t snore, he wouldn’t know what she was doing. Tom was so angry that he gritted his teeth.

Tom was looking for a chance to escape. After passing through Detroit, he secretly rejoiced because the car was out of gas. Seeing a gas station ahead, Tom asked to stop for refueling. The woman said, “You can refuel, but don’t even think about running away. You can’t outrun my bullets.”

Tom wasn’t stupid. He didn’t want to act recklessly. The attendant at the gas station was a middle – aged woman. She asked Tom, “How much gas do you want?” Tom opened the fuel tank cap and winked at her, saying, “Fill it up.” The middle – aged woman had no idea that Tom was being kidnapped. Seeing him winking, she thought he was a lecher and gave him a fierce glare. As the tank was almost full, Tom was getting really anxious. He winked at the woman again, which really angered her. She snapped, “Stop winking at me. I don’t know you. I won’t give you any discount.”

At this time, the woman sneered, pulled Tom, and said, “Stop making a fool of yourself here. Pay the money and get in the car. You’re such a womanizer. If you don’t leave now, I’ll really lose my temper!”

Tom knew what “losing her temper” meant. He didn’t want to get shot, so he obediently got into the car. After passing through Milwaukee, Tom became more and more terrified. He knew they were getting close to Chicago. Who knew if the woman would kill him to cover her tracks after they arrived? Just as he was panicking, he suddenly saw the police checking cars ahead. A police officer waved for him to pull over.

These police officers were like saviors. Tom thought he must send them a thank – you banner later. But he didn’t dare to show his excitement. He pretended to be innocent and asked, “The police are checking cars. What should we do?” The woman sat up and pressed the pistol against Tom’s stomach, saying, “If you dare to say a single wrong word after we stop, I’ll shoot you dead right away!”

After the car stopped, the police officer first saluted Tom and then said, “Please show me your ID.”

Tom gave the police officer his ID card, driver’s license, and vehicle registration. He also winked at the officer and tilted his head towards the woman. The police officer looked at him and said, “There’s something wrong with your ID. Get out of the car for a check!” Tom looked back at the woman, making a helpless expression. The woman had no choice but to say, “Get out of the car.” As soon as Tom got out of the car, he shouted at the top of his voice, “Gun! Gun! The woman has a gun!”

Hearing this, all the police officers immediately pointed their guns at the woman in the car. One of the police officers shouted sternly, “Don’t move! Put your hands on your head and get out of the car.”

Tom was overjoyed. He was finally saved. That woman was really something. She remained calm, put her hands on her head, and got out of the car. She even said to Tom, “You’re angry with me, and you’re lying…”
