The Flight over the Bermuda Triangle chapter 3
by Nicholas EverettCustoms! Yes, Clinton would only open his bag at the customs. If she could delay him there… Jenny had already written “One diamond ring” on the declaration form. Then, an idea popped into her head. She went to the cloakroom and took down the windbreaker labeled “18”…
The buzzer rang. The plane was about to land. Jenny started helping the passengers get their coats. She also gave the windbreaker to Clinton.
At the customs checkpoint, Jenny handed in a blank declaration form. When it was Clinton’s turn, he said to the customs officer, “I only have one bag.” Then he took out one item after another: some underwear, a shaving kit, and a magazine. Jenny’s eyes were fixed on the magazine. She walked up firmly and said loudly, “Why didn’t you declare the diamond ring you hid in the lining of your windbreaker?”
“What diamond ring?” Clinton was at a loss. The customs officer tensed up and motioned for him to raise his hands for a search. Jenny said to the officer, “When I lent him this magazine, I saw him admiring a diamond ring and then using a blade to cut a slit in the lining of his windbreaker. He probably wanted to avoid… ”
Clinton lifted his windbreaker, and his face turned pale. There was indeed a slit in the lining! The customs officers surrounded him and took out a shiny diamond ring. Clinton’s hands were in the air, his eyes filled with confusion, anger, and frustration. Jenny grabbed the magazine and said, “Goodbye, sir!” Then she turned and left. Behind her, she could hear the customs officer shouting at Clinton. “Don’t bother that lady. Come with us to the office!”
As soon as Jenny walked out of the checkpoint, a man ran over with a phone in his hand. “Do you have the magazine?” She nodded weakly and took the magazine out of her bag. The man said, “Thank God! Dick called from Bermuda. He’s been waiting there for over half an hour. He said he was sure someone was after you. Are you okay?”
Jenny asked, “Is the call still on?”
The man handed her the phone. She heard Dick’s long sigh on the other end. “Honey, put on the ring. I don’t want to give you time to think about my proposal.”
Jenny shed tears. “Dick, I’m sorry. I lost the ring. I could only choose one between it and the magazine.”
Dick laughed on the phone. “Silly girl, it doesn’t matter. I’ll buy you a new one when I get back!”
