After the driver finished his meal, seeing that the mayor and the developer were having a lively conversation and there were other guests at the table, he didn’t go over to say hello. He picked up the whiskey and went back to his room to rest. He had just lain down for a little while when he heard the door open. Someone came in, and from the voice, he knew it was the mayor. The driver quickly wanted to get up from the bed when he suddenly heard the mayor say, “I came back to get something. Why are you following me?” The driver was shocked. Who was the mayor talking to? Then he heard the developer’s voice, “Hehe, this is a little gift, $10,000. Don’t worry, no one else knows about it.”

The driver, who had been a bit drowsy, was instantly wide awake! He heard the mayor laughing and saying, “Well… then… okay, I’ll… think about it.” After a soft murmur, the door “banged” shut, and there was no more sound in the room.

The driver broke out in a cold sweat. Although he had seen the mayor accept gifts like cigarettes and alcohol before, this was a huge amount of money, $10,000, which could land someone in jail! His heart was pounding. Suddenly, he thought: Oh no, if the mayor knows I was in the room just now, what if… He was so scared that he quickly jumped out of bed and realized that he had to leave this trouble – prone place as soon as possible.

Just then, his phone rang. Looking at the number, he saw it was the mayor’s. The driver was extremely panicked. The mayor must have noticed he wasn’t in the restaurant and would surely come back to look for him. If he went out now, he might run into the mayor face – to – face. What should he do? He looked around and his eyes fell on the bottle of whiskey he had brought back from the restaurant. He had an idea. He picked up the bottle, opened the cork, and poured the whiskey on his face and body without thinking twice. Then he lay back on the bed, pretending to be dead drunk.

Just as he finished all this, the door opened. The mayor rushed in anxiously, pushed open the driver’s door, and said angrily, “Why did you come back so early?” The driver pretended to be in a deep sleep, snoring softly and not answering. The mayor walked to the driver’s bedside, smelled the alcohol, and pushed him hard. The driver felt he couldn’t pretend anymore, so he pretended to be woken up and struggled to sit up from the bed.

The mayor looked at him suspiciously, “So, you’ve been sleeping all this time?” The driver rubbed his eyes and pretended to be embarrassed, “This whiskey is really strong. I only had a couple of sips, and I got sleepy. Mayor, when did you come back?” The mayor stared into his eyes, thinking he didn’t seem to be lying. He secretly let out a sigh of relief and said, “You have to drive, so don’t drink in the future.” “Yes, yes.” The driver agreed, knowing that he had managed to get through this. His pounding heart finally calmed down. Of course, he never expected that he would run into Officer John on the way back in the afternoon.
