One day a year later

Soon, John forgot about this incident. One day, a year later, John stopped an overloaded out – of – town large truck. After the truck pulled over to the side of the road, the driver quickly jumped out, took out a pack of cigarettes, and bowed his head obsequiously, saying, “Officer, give me a break. Business is tough these days. If I don’t carry enough goods, I can’t make any money.” John thought the man looked familiar. Then he remembered, “Aren’t you the driver who was with the leader and claimed to have been drinking when you actually hadn’t?” The driver was startled. Looking at John, he also remembered, “Oh, you’re that police officer!” John asked him, “Why are you driving a large truck now?” The driver waved his hand, “Don’t even mention it. It’s all your fault. If you hadn’t found out I hadn’t been drinking that time, I’d still be…” At this point, he suddenly stopped, then changed his tone and said with a smile, “No, actually, I should thank you!”

John was confused, “First you blame me, then you thank me. What on earth do you mean?” The driver said with a smile, “I’ll explain it to you, but you have to fine me less.”

The driver told John that that time he drove to the big city to take the deputy mayor to meet a real – estate developer. The mayor was in charge of urban construction, and the developer wanted to get a development project through the mayor. That day, the developer booked a suite for the mayor in a hotel. For convenience, the mayor asked the driver to sleep in a small room next door. At lunch, the driver, of course, had his own meal. To show his generosity, the developer also served the driver high – end whiskey and good cigars. The driver said, “I’m driving, so I can’t drink. Please take the whiskey away.” The developer said, “If you don’t drink it, you can take it home.”
