Strange Exam Questions chapter 1
by Shelby MedinaI’m a gentle and only child girl. I’m not sure if it’s because I look okay or for other reasons, but anyway, there are many guys pursuing me. Facing so many suitors, I was a bit indecisive, so I decided to let my dad help me choose. I’ve always admired my dad. He has a really sharp eye. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have given him such an important task.
One day, I seriously put forward my request. Dad seemed very happy and amiably gave two suggestions: First, I should make my own decisions about love and marriage, and he and Mom would never interfere. Second, marriage is related to a lifetime of happiness, so I must be cautious. He suggested that I expand my social circle. When I meet someone I like, bring him home first and let the whole family reach a consensus.
Dad’s democratic attitude made me very happy. I said cheerfully, “I’ll pick someone who gets along well with me, and you help me assess his future. If both aspects pass, it’ll be great!”
“Don’t worry. When it comes to future prospects, no one can get past me without real skills. I’ve got a tough question ready for them!” Dad said confidently.
I knew Dad always did things in an unpredictable way, and this test question wouldn’t be that simple. However, I never expected that his question would be so strange that it made me laugh and cry at the same time!
A few days later, I brought back a handsome guy named Jack. He was good – looking and came from a well – connected family. Recently, he took the civil service exam held by the city government, and he ranked first in both the written test and the interview. He was truly one in a million in terms of looks and talent. Although we hadn’t known each other for long, we had a good feeling for each other. I secretly hoped that he could pass the test smoothly.
After we met, Mom smiled like a big chrysanthemum, and Dad also looked very happy. He asked about Jack’s well – being and chatted with the young man about all sorts of things. It seemed that both “examiners” were very satisfied, but strangely, Dad didn’t seem to give any tough questions.
Before I knew it, it was almost noon. Dad said casually, “Jack, stay for lunch. I’ll cook some of my signature dishes myself. And you can’t just sit around doing nothing. The kitchen knife at home is too dull. You two go to the street and buy one.” Jack readily agreed and pulled me to the street to buy a kitchen knife.
It didn’t take long for us to come back, chatting and laughing. Jack handed over a shiny new kitchen knife. Dad asked casually, “Young man, is this knife sharp?” “Yes! We walked several blocks and visited several stores to pick the sharpest one. You can try it.” Jack wiped the sweat off his forehead and replied. Dad cut some vegetables and kept praising, “Good knife, good knife! It’s really extremely sharp! Comrade Jack, you have quite good taste.” Although Dad hadn’t given the test question yet, it was obvious that the atmosphere was harmonious and everything was going smoothly. I was secretly happy.
After the meal, Dad politely saw Jack off. I was blushing, waiting for Dad’s opinion. Who would have thought that after closing the door, he turned to me and said, “Jack is a nice guy, but he’s still a bit inexperienced. You should think it over again.”
I was stunned and said aggrievedly, “Why? You didn’t even give him a question!” Mom was also confused. “It’s a secret. I’ve already tested him!” Dad lovingly patted my head and gave a faint smile. “You’ll understand later. If you meet other suitable guys, just bring them home.” Already tested? What was the test? I was very puzzled and felt down for several days.
A long time later, I brought a young man named Tom home. Tom came from a family of senior intellectuals. He was very knowledgeable and had an elegant way of speaking. He was good in every aspect. He chatted with Dad for a while, and they seemed to get along well. Just when I breathed a sigh of relief, Dad suddenly stopped the conversation and told Tom to go to the street to buy a kitchen knife.
The kitchen knife Jack bought was still brand – new. Why did we need to buy another one? I had a hunch: Could Dad’s test be related to the kitchen knife? To help Tom pass the test smoothly, I studied the “kitchen knife” problem with him carefully, and finally we reached an agreement. We went straight to an import store and spent a lot of dollars to buy a well – designed famous – brand kitchen knife.
After seeing Tom off after the meal, what I was worried about still happened. Dad said, “Tom is really outstanding, but he’s not quite mature yet. Maybe you should keep looking.” I was unhappy. I pouted and angrily asked, “What’s wrong with Tom?” Dad comforted me, “Don’t be in a hurry. Dad will definitely give you a satisfactory answer later. You should take the long – term view. Keep looking.” I was a bit frustrated and couldn’t figure out what my love had to do with kitchen knives.
