{{Claim for Compensation}} chapter 2
by Christopher HarrisGive Me an Explanation
Mr. Smith quickly came up with a plan after assessing the situation. He exaggeratedly slapped his head. “Oh, I remember! There was indeed an accident, and I rushed to the scene immediately after it happened. But… young man, I have no impression at all of you saving people while injured!”
“How could this be!” Jack said unwillingly, trying to remind him. “Please recall. When I was saving people, my right leg was cut by a big piece of glass. The blood soaked my trouser leg. You saw it and asked me to go to the hospital for a check – up. I thought it was just a flesh wound and was eager to go home, so you stopped a car and sent me away. You even paid for my bus ticket. It was only a long time after I got home that I found out my bone was damaged. It’s a pity that I missed the best time for treatment… Please recall again. Did you promise me something when I was leaving?”
Mr. Smith remembered that Jack’s actions had touched him at that time. So when Jack was leaving, he really did say that if there was a problem with his leg later, he could contact him. But why did Jack come now? His leg was probably disabled due to other reasons later, and now he wanted the company to take the responsibility! Mr. Smith didn’t want to be unjustly blamed. He shook his head like a rattle. “There’s no such thing. I have no impression at all! Please don’t say any more. I’m going to get off work!” He stood up and made a “please leave” gesture.
Jack’s face suddenly flushed red. His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down a few times. Embarrassedly, he said, “Mr. Smith, how could you just forget about this? Without this accident, my situation wouldn’t be so miserable! You promised me at that time. How could you go back on your word? Every word I said is true. You must be honest and give me an explanation…”
Sure enough, he came to extort money! Mr. Smith’s heart skipped a beat. His good impression of Jack vanished in an instant. He patted his chest and said, “Okay, if you can find convincing witnesses and evidence, we guarantee to give you a satisfactory explanation!” Mr. Smith was confident. The bus was a long – distance one, and the passengers came from all over. So much time had passed. Where could Jack find evidence now? It was like looking for a needle in a haystack!
Jack also knew the difficulty of finding evidence. He was so anxious that he was sweating all over. He murmured to himself, “What should I do? What should I do… There’s not enough time! My father is very ill and waiting for me… No, I must find the evidence…” Suddenly, he stared fixedly at a morning newspaper on the coffee table in front of the sofa and fell into deep thought.
