Perilous Situations Everywhere chapter 1
by James McmillanThe Man-Eating Quagmire in the Desert
In the northern part of Botswana, there are many tribes. Due to their remoteness and backwardness, there are no doctors or hospitals in the tribes. There is a young Chinese doctor named Jiang Ran in the town hospital. He often travels a long distance to the tribes to treat patients. He came to Africa as a volunteer, and his capable assistant, Nurse Barbara, is a beautiful African girl. The two have been in love for a long time.
One evening, after treating the tribespeople, Jiang Ran and Barbara drove a black jeep back to the town hospital. It was three or four hundred miles to the town, and there were no roads. They had to cross the desert and the grassland. Usually, they had a safe journey, but as the saying goes, unexpected things may happen. After the jeep entered the desert, a vast ocean suddenly appeared in front of them. There were ships and islands on the sea… The scenery was extremely beautiful. Although they knew it was a mirage, Jiang Ran couldn’t help driving the car towards the “sea”. After driving a short distance, a high sand dune appeared in front of them, blocking the way. Jiang Ran was still excited and reluctant to give up. He jumped out of the car and continued running towards the “sea”. But as he was running, he suddenly let out a scream: he had fallen into a brown quagmire covered with a pale purple mist. The mud was bubbling, and the wet mud had reached his knees! Jiang Ran was extremely panicked and struggled hard to get out, but the more he moved, the deeper he sank. In a blink of an eye, the quagmire had reached his waist…
At this time, Barbara was about twenty meters away from Jiang Ran. She was stunned by the sight in front of her. She never thought that there would be such a “man-eating” quagmire hidden in the desert! Seeing that Jiang Ran was about to be swallowed up, Barbara was extremely anxious. She quickly searched the car for something to pull him out, but there was nothing in the car except a few bottles of anesthetics and some medical instruments. Barbara ran around frantically, hoping to find a rope or something on the ground, but she found nothing!
Jiang Ran shouted to comfort Barbara not to be anxious and told her to go to the town quickly to find someone. Barbara didn’t expect her beloved to comfort her like this in such a dangerous situation. She couldn’t help shedding tears. She thought that in the desert, the temperature would drop rapidly as soon as the sun set. Within a few hours, it would drop to zero. By the time she got to the town and came back, Jiang Ran would have frozen to death!
At this time, the sun had already set, and Barbara felt a little cold. Just when she was at a loss what to do, she suddenly noticed the flashing headlights in the distance. She was overjoyed and honked the car horn crazily. Finally, the car in the distance drove over.
It was a jeep. A young man got out of the car. Barbara recognized him. He was the son of a chief named Celis. This man was idle all day long. Moreover, he had long been in love with Barbara and had proposed to her many times, but she had always politely refused him. Later, when Celis learned that Barbara was in love with the Chinese doctor Jiang Ran, he was full of hostility towards Jiang Ran. Now, for Jiang Ran’s sake, Barbara still asked Celis for help.
After hearing what Barbara said, Celis spread his hands and said that there was no rope in his car either. Seeing Barbara’s skeptical look, he opened the car door and rummaged through it for her to see. Indeed, there was none. Barbara was extremely disappointed and cried sadly.
“Don’t cry. I have a way to save him even without a rope!” Celis said mysteriously. “However, you have to promise me one condition.”
Barbara asked anxiously, “What condition? Tell me quickly!”
Celis said, “You leave that Chinese man and marry me!”
