The Choice of a Billionaire chapter 1
by Molly HernandezCary, the son of a billionaire, had just arrived in Hawaii with his girlfriend when he received a call from home. His father’s old illness had flared up, and it seemed he didn’t have much time left. Cary was urged to come back immediately to inherit the family fortune. With no choice, Cary had to abandon this romantic vacation and rushed back home.
Cary and his girlfriend, Mary, had come out this time without telling his father. Cary was already engaged to a woman named Elena. Under his father’s insistence, he was forced into this engagement, but Cary didn’t love Elena. He thought she was only interested in his family’s billions. When he met Mary at a party, he introduced himself as the son of a train – driver. The two hit it off right away, and Cary fell head – over – heels in love with her.
When Mary learned that Cary was the son of a rich man, she was very unhappy. “If I had known earlier, I wouldn’t have dated you. I hate the rich,” she said. Cary shrugged his shoulders and replied, “There’s nothing I can do. It’s not something I can choose.”
When Cary got home, his father, the old Mr. Cary, was lying unconscious in the hospital bed. And there was that annoying Elena standing by the bedside. After a while, the old man woke up. He called the lawyer and announced the content of his will to Cary. As the only heir, Cary had the right to inherit his father’s billions, but he had to meet two conditions. First, he had to earn a thousand dollars within ten days. Second, he had to find the key to the family safe within a week in a designated area…
According to the will, Cary had to find a job the next day. His father didn’t allow him to work in the family company, and he couldn’t reveal his identity. In this city with a high unemployment rate, it was really difficult for Cary to find a well – paid and comfortable job in a short time. When there was only a week left, he finally decided to take on a job he had never even considered before: washing dishes in a restaurant and working as a house cleaner. Nearly ten hours of work every day was really tough for this young master. Fortunately, he was a man who never gave up. After gritting his teeth and persevering for a week, he earned a thousand dollars and also experienced the hardships of the lower – class society.
Earning a thousand dollars was difficult, but it was nothing compared to the second task. He had to find out where the key to his family’s safe was on a small street within a week. It was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Cary went to the shabby little street his father had specified. The people living here were all from the lower – class. The dilapidated scene here was in sharp contrast to the prosperous streets outside. Cary rarely came to such places before and was not used to it. He frowned and covered his nose, constantly asking people on the street, “I’m Mr. Cary’s son. Do you know where the key to my father’s safe is?” But the passers – by were cold. Some just said “I don’t know” and walked away in a hurry. Some were too lazy to talk and just shook their heads. Some even pretended to be deaf and dumb and ignored him.
After three days, Cary had found nothing. Then Elena came and said she could help him. Cary refused without thinking. Elena smiled and said, “It’s easy to refuse me, but can you find the key this way? Why don’t you believe I can help you? Can’t you just give it a try?” Cary thought that he really had no other options and time was running out, so he agreed to let her try with him.
So, Elena and Cary went to the small street together.
Elena smiled and politely asked everyone they met. Although people couldn’t give them a satisfactory answer, everyone they asked answered them seriously. As another day passed, they still found nothing. Just when Cary was feeling dejected, Elena pulled him and pointed to the street. “That old woman is having a hard time. Let’s go and help her,” she said. So Cary and Elena went up and helped the old woman carry the newly – delivered fruits into her shop. When they were leaving, Elena habitually asked, “Dear madam, can you tell me where the key to Mr. Cary’s safe is?” The old woman was a bit hard – of – hearing and didn’t catch what she said. Elena repeated it in her ear. The old woman nodded and pointed to the east, saying, “Go there and wait for old Sam. He can tell you!”
The two were overjoyed and quickly went to the street corner as the old woman had directed. Just a short while later, a beggar walked over. The strong smell of sweat on him made Cary wrinkle his nose, but Elena seriously took out a bill and gave it to him. After thanking them, the beggar took two steps, then stopped and turned around, asking, “Miss, sir, do you need any help?” Elena said, “We’re waiting for Mr. Sam here. Do you know him?” The beggar said, “Wait here.” Then he rushed off.
Soon, the beggar brought an old beggar to Cary and Elena. He said happily, “This is old Sam. I’ve found him for you!” Elena sincerely thanked him and gave another bill to Uncle Sam. She asked if he knew where the key to Mr. Cary’s safe was. Old Sam nodded and said, “I’m old and my memory is not good. I don’t know if I can remember. I need to think about it. Come back tomorrow.”
The next day, Cary and Elena went back to that place and waited. A long time passed, but there was no sign of old Sam. They asked the passers – by, but no one had seen him. They had to wait patiently in the same place. It was not until five o’clock in the afternoon that old Sam finally showed up. He said, “I remembered. The goldsmith Bob seems to know about this.”
Cary and Elena followed old Sam’s directions and went to Bob’s place. The goldsmith didn’t answer them after hearing their story. He just pointed to a stool beside him, indicating for them to sit down, and then went on with his work without saying another word. Cary and Elena sat on the shabby stool. Before they knew it, it was getting dark. They were tired and hungry, but they didn’t dare to leave.
After a few hours, the goldsmith finally finished his work. He handed a newly – made golden key to Cary and said, “This is the key to the safe that Mr. Cary ordered.”
