The Sixth Iron Chest chapter 1
by Eric MarshallA Villa from the Sky
Jules was an unemployed young man with no money. One day, he was lying in bed, flipping through the newspaper in search of a suitable job. Suddenly, a house – selling notice caught his eye. It read: There was a villa at the foot of Mount Adrid on the outskirts, which had a history of over two hundred years. The owner of the villa was Dade Hall, and he was selling the villa for two million dollars. Those interested should contact Frans Law Firm.
At the end of the notice, there were a few lines in small print: People with the surname Osgood were especially welcome to buy this villa. If you also owned a white handkerchief embroidered with the appearance of this villa, the owner of the villa would give the villa to you for free.
After reading this, Jules was so excited that he almost jumped out of bed. It turned out that Jules’ surname was Osgood, and before his father passed away, he had given Jules a white handkerchief embroidered with the shape of a villa.
Jules quickly rummaged through his things and found the handkerchief. But when he saw it, he felt a bit disappointed. It was actually a half – cut handkerchief. However, Jules still decided to take a chance.
The next day, Jules went to Frans Law Firm and met Lawyer Frans.
Lawyer Frans took the half – handkerchief that Jules brought, examined it carefully in his hands, then opened the safe and took out another half of an identical handkerchief from it.
Frans put the two halves of the handkerchief together. When he saw that they fit perfectly, he shouted excitedly, “It’s incredible! Finally found you!”
Frans stood up and said to Jules, “I’ll take you to see Mr. Hall right now. As for the origin of the handkerchief… I’ll tell you slowly some other time.”
Soon, the two of them arrived at the villa at the foot of Mount Adrid. Hall, who had received Frans’ notice, was waiting for them in the study. He sized Jules up and down with a contemptuous look and a sneer appeared at the corner of his mouth, making Jules feel extremely uncomfortable.
Frans quickly handed the two half – handkerchiefs to Hall and whispered something to him. Then, with Frans as a witness, Hall generously completed the transfer procedures with Jules and gave him the keys to the house.
After finishing all this, Hall said to Jules, “Young man, from now on, this house is yours! But you must remember what’s written in our contract. You’re not allowed to sell the villa, nor are you allowed to move or sell any items in the house. Otherwise, I’ll take it back.” He paused for a moment and then whispered in Jules’ ear, “No matter what you encounter in the future, I advise you, never be greedy.” With that, Hall and his family and servants quickly moved out of the villa.
Jules never dreamed that in just a few days, he had transformed from a penniless pauper into a rich man with a villa.
