The Filial Monkey chapter 4
by Jennifer JacksonThe Spiritual Monkeys Expose the Theft
In the middle of the night, several policemen came to Jack’s place. They tied up the sleeping Jack, searched for the stolen treasures, and threw him into the death – row cell.
It turned out that while Jack was sleeping, “Big Guy” took a jade tablet and went to the county courthouse to find “Little Guy”. He asked “Little Guy” to give the jade tablet to the sheriff’s wife. When the sheriff’s wife saw the monkey bringing a gift, she was shocked and immediately called the sheriff. The sheriff saw that the jade tablet was inscribed with “Royal Gift” on the front and “For the 60th Birthday of the Senator” on the back. He knew it was a gift from the president to the senator. As a local, the sheriff was familiar with the legend of the “burial – cave treasures”. After questioning his wife, he deduced that Jack must have robbed the burial cave and sent the policemen to arrest him.
Faced with the evidence, Jack confessed. It turned out that his real name was Jack Thompson. He was a former monkey – trainer who had committed a murder in his hometown and had fled to this remote area near the Colorado River to hide. The sheriff reported the case to the state authorities, and according to the law, Jack was sentenced to death by hanging.
In the fall, the cold wind blew along the Colorado River. Many people flocked to the execution site, making it as lively as a festival.
Just as the execution was about to start, a policeman reported to the sheriff that “Big Guy” and “Little Guy” were clinging to a passing tourist, tearing his outer clothes. The sheriff had seen the monkeys’ abilities before and knew they were very intelligent. He thought there must be a reason for them to stop the tourist, so he ordered the policeman to bring the tourist over. When the tourist arrived, the sheriff saw that his clothes were indeed torn, revealing a monkey – skin vest inside.
The tourist explained that this was the monkey skin he had bought from Jack more than a year ago.
The sheriff was deeply moved. He asked the tourist to take off the monkey – skin vest and return it to “Big Guy” and “Little Guy”. The two monkeys held the monkey skin and let out a long, sad cry. People looked up and saw the two monkeys, carrying the monkey skin, disappearing into the mountains near the Colorado River one after another…
