At the Mercy of Circumstances chapter 1
by Teresa ChaseIt was the day of the boss, Robert’s wedding. All the employees of the company came excitedly. The wedding was going smoothly. But just as the bride, Lois, was about to say “I do” to Robert, someone in the guests suddenly shouted, “Wait a minute!”
Looking in the direction of the voice, it turned out to be Martin, an employee of the company! Martin stood up from the guest seats and walked step by step towards the bride. His expression was very strange. The muscles on his face twitched, looking like a smile and also like a cry. Although Robert was smiling, he couldn’t hide his inner anger. He asked, “Martin, do you have any suggestions?”
Martin opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something, but instead, he grabbed the boss’s bride and hugged her tightly in his arms. The bride only let out a half – scream before her sexy and beautiful lips were sealed by Martin’s thick lips.
Lois struggled out of Martin’s arms, angrily slapped Martin, and then threw herself into Robert’s arms and cried. Unexpectedly, this slap didn’t wake Martin up. He pulled Lois out of the boss’s arms again, knelt down at the bride’s feet with a thud, and kissed her feet passionately, saying, “Lois, I love you. I love you so much. You can’t marry Robert…”
Robert was so angry that his face turned pale. He waved his hand, and several colleagues stepped forward to drag away the almost crazy Martin. But at this time, Lois suddenly said, “I need to reconsider my decision.” The wedding finally ended halfway.
On the way back, the colleagues were all talking about Martin and unanimously believed that Martin would definitely be fired.
No one expected that a week later, Martin swaggered back to the company again and was promoted to the department manager by Robert. Martin said proudly that it was the boss who called him back again and again.
Good things kept coming. A few days later, Martin received a call from Lois, saying that she wanted to see him.
Martin originally wanted to decline, but Lois’s voice seemed to have a kind of magic. As soon as he opened his mouth, he said “yes”.
When Martin arrived at the appointed time, Lois was already waiting at the bar in advance. She told Martin that she had broken off the engagement with Robert. Martin was shocked. He felt both ashamed and uneasy inside. He really wanted to apologize to Lois, but when he struggled to open his mouth and only said a “good”, Lois continued, “Yes, you’re right. After calm thinking, I think Robert doesn’t love me…”
Lois was in tears as she spoke. She grabbed Martin’s hand and said emotionally, “Martin, your actions at the wedding really touched me. Only then did I understand that you love me so much. I know that no one in this world can love me like you…”
Lois’s words made Martin blush. He swallowed hard and stammered, “I, I… love you…” Lois’s eyes were bright, immersed in the touch and happiness.
From that day on, Lois often dated Martin. Martin’s repeated panic and excitement were all regarded by Lois as a sign that Martin loved her deeply. But the more so, the less able he was to tell the truth. As the contact increased, Martin really fell in love with this beautiful and simple girl, and he couldn’t live without her.
One day, Martin and Lois held a wedding in the church. They looked sweet and happy. The colleagues from the company came, and even the boss, Robert, came. Everyone was blessing this couple who truly loved each other.
Who would have thought that just when the priest asked Martin if he was willing to marry Lois, Martin suddenly changed his expression. He pointed at Lois and shouted, “You ugly and selfish woman. I don’t love you at all. Get out of here right now. I never want to see you again!”
People were stunned again. Lois’s face turned as white as a sheet. She looked at the man she loved deeply in horror and just couldn’t believe it was true. But Martin cursed and pushed her to the ground. Lois sat on the ground and looked at Martin again. She was desperate. She got up, tore off her wedding dress, covered her face and ran out of the church. Martin chased after her, but he didn’t go to pull her back. Instead, he followed her and cursed her with even more vicious words, while slapping himself hard in the face.
All the people who attended the wedding left. Martin squatted on the ground alone and cried with his head in his hands. At this time, someone sighed beside him. Martin looked up and saw Robert looking at him sympathetically. Robert patted Martin’s shoulder and said, “I know you’re a patient with Reverse – Intention Syndrome!”
Robert was right. Martin did suffer from Reverse – Intention Syndrome. It was a strange disease. Usually, patients were no different from ordinary people, but they might get sick at critical moments. When sick, patients couldn’t control themselves. If you wanted to throw something away, your hand would pick it up instead. If you wanted to hug someone, your hand might slap that person… This disease brought great pain to Martin. He had seen many doctors and taken a lot of medicine, but not only did it not get better, it got worse. At first, only his hands didn’t follow his will, and later even his mouth went against his will.
He had never told anyone about his illness. He didn’t understand how the boss knew about it!
Robert sighed again and said, “I’m also a patient with Reverse – Intention Syndrome. I don’t love Lois, but I uncontrollably pursued her and asked her to marry me. I hated you for disturbing my wedding, but I just had to give you an important position…”
Martin said with tears in his eyes, “When I didn’t love her, I just told her I loved her. When I really fell in love with her, I drove her away. God, what have I done…”
Martin didn’t want to lose Lois. He was determined to cure his illness, tell her the truth and ask for her forgiveness.
However, when Martin went to the hospital again, after repeated consultations, the doctor told him very seriously that his Reverse – Intention Syndrome had already been cured!
Martin shouted, “This is impossible! You must be wrong. Would I not know if my illness was cured? If it was cured, why would I still do things against my will?”
The doctor said, “Reverse – Intention Syndrome has made you form a kind of behavior habit. Although your illness is cured now, this habit still dominates your behavior…”
