Take a look at who you are chapter 3
by Samuel SalazarAt this time, Nater said to Gus, “You stay in the false wall for a while. I’ll go out to get some fresh air. Be careful not to make any mistakes.”
As Gus was crawling into the secret room behind the wardrobe, he said proudly, “Don’t worry. We’ve played this double – act many times. Just go out and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air.”
Nater walked out of the house leisurely, sat on a chair on the lawn, smoked a cigar, enjoyed the fresh air and watched the birds flying freely in the sky.
Just then, the sheriff came in with several policemen. Nater was stunned for a moment but quickly regained his composure. He greeted the sheriff actively, “Sheriff, haven’t you solved all the problems yet?”
Just now, when Nater was hiding in the secret room behind the wardrobe, he had recognized this fat sheriff through the extremely secret wireless microphone and peeping device that Gus carried with him, and he had heard every word of the conversation between Gus and the sheriff clearly. Now he was just like Gus, and who could spot the flaw?
The sheriff first gave Nater an apologetic smile, then said indignantly, “I’m really sorry, Mr. Gus. Just now I went back and reported the search result here to the chief. That bastard was furious and scolded me for being incompetent…” As he spoke, the sheriff took out a piece of paper and said to Nater, “Mr. Gus, sorry to trouble you. Please leave a fingerprint next to Nater’s fingerprint.”
Nater was stunned for a moment and then tried to remain calm as he asked, “Is it necessary?”
The sheriff snorted through his nose and said angrily, “It’s absolutely unnecessary! But our bastard chief insisted that I didn’t check your fingerprints carefully and accurately. He forced me to take your fingerprints back so that he could check and compare them himself…”
Sweat broke out on Nater’s face. “Can I refuse?”
The sheriff looked very business – like. He spread his hands helplessly and said, “Although I’m as disgusted as you with that stupid chief’s actions, a citizen should cooperate with the police, which is required by law. Besides, leaving a fingerprint won’t cause you any trouble. Am I right?”
Nater stood up and was about to go into the house. The policemen brought by the sheriff immediately blocked his way. “Please leave your fingerprint before you go. Otherwise, we’ll arrest you for obstructing official business!”
Nater still tried to push it off while pretending to be calm. The sheriff waved his hand, and several policemen rushed forward, forcefully grabbed Nater’s right hand and pressed it next to the existing fingerprint on the paper. The sheriff looked at the two fingerprints carefully, his face showing great shock. He took out his pistol and shouted, “Arrest him!”
