That evening, the whole family was sitting together. Tom happily told them the good news, saying, “Our Lily is so lucky. Mayor Johnson’s son, Jack, has taken a fancy to her.”

Unexpectedly, upon hearing this, Lily suddenly stood up and said, “I don’t agree! That Jack was writing love letters to female classmates when he was in the first grade of junior high. I’d rather die than marry him. Either I don’t marry at all, or I’ll marry David!” David is the son of the Johnson family, the outsider family in the village. He and Lily grew up together and developed feelings for each other. Tom thought David was quite good – looking and had tacitly approved of their relationship.

Surprised by his daughter’s opposition, Tom knew that he couldn’t force her. He rolled his eyes and said with a smile, “Lily, this is your lifelong event, which is related to your future happiness and the future of your brothers. Well, since everything is about democracy nowadays, let’s also practice democracy in our family. We’ll vote on this matter. You can’t ignore the opinions of your parents, grandparents.”

Lily thought about it. She believed that her grandparents loved her the most and would definitely vote for David. As for her brothers, they would probably side with her father. As long as her mother supported her, she had a chance of winning. So, she said, “Okay, let’s vote.”

After the voting, the result was that Jack won with a score of five to two. David only got two votes. Besides Lily, only grandma voted for him. Seeing the result, Lily was stunned. She angrily glared at her family, tossed her hair, and said stubbornly, “This doesn’t count. If we’re going to vote, the whole village should vote. Let’s have a village – wide election. That’s real democracy.”

Tom said angrily, “You really come up with strange ideas. Do you think the whole village should choose a son – in – law for you? Is this a public election for the village head? This is our family’s private matter. What does it have to do with outsiders?”

“You always say that our whole village is like one big family. Then let everyone help me choose a son – in – law.” Lily was very confident. Afraid that her father wouldn’t agree, she threatened, “If there’s no village – wide election, then I won’t marry.” She was confident that since David was well – known to everyone in the village, if there was a village – wide election, David had a greater chance of winning.

Tom knew exactly what his daughter was thinking. After a moment’s thought, he had an idea. Staring at his daughter, he said, “A village – wide election is okay, but this time you have to keep your word and not go back on your decision.”

Lily was just being unreasonable. She was overjoyed to hear her father agree and readily agreed.

Tom added, “Then let’s set it. Tomorrow evening, I’ll gather everyone for a village – wide election to choose a son – in – law.”

After the matter was settled, although it was already late, Lily didn’t dare to delay. She quickly went out to find David to discuss countermeasures. Tom didn’t stop her. After his daughter left, he picked up the phone and quickly reported the situation to Mayor Johnson. Of course, he didn’t dare to say that Lily disliked Jack. He just said that Lily and David had developed feelings for each other and it was hard for her to make a choice, so she proposed a democratic election. Mayor Johnson was silent for a while and then asked, “If there’s a democratic election, does Jack have a chance?” His voice showed his dissatisfaction.

Tom assured him, “Don’t worry. I’ll talk to the villagers in advance. My villagers, who would dare not listen to me?”

Mayor Johnson then became enthusiastic again, “In – law, then I’ll trouble you. Tomorrow, I’ll send Jack over with some small gifts for everyone.”

Tom was overjoyed, “That’s great. With him helping me visit every household, I can guarantee that this matter is a sure thing.”

Early the next morning, Jack drove to Springfield. The young man was handsome, and in his neat tax – office uniform, he looked energetic. He immediately outshone the plain – looking David. All day long, Jack followed Tom from door to door. Every time they entered a house, Jack would respectfully put a pack of cigarettes on the table. He was very sweet – tongued, calling everyone “uncle” and saying that from now on, they were all family. He said that if there was anything they needed in the future, they could just ask.
