One’s life is about having the spirit to persevere. chapter 3
by Jennifer DoyleA Strange Incident
Jack shook his head as he thought about this. After a long time, the stagecoach finally arrived in Chicago. After getting off the coach, Jack had a hard time finding the place Tommy mentioned in the letter. It was a small grocery store in the west of the city, selling daily necessities. The store was not big but was tidy and clean.
Jack stood outside the store for a long time. His legs felt as heavy as lead. He had never been so hesitant in his life. This matter was so strange that he had to think it over carefully. Finally, he gritted his teeth, stamped his foot, and pushed open the door of the grocery store.
The inside of the small store was well – organized. A young woman was sitting behind the counter, holding a child and humming a lullaby. The child was about two or three years old. One hand was shaking a rattle, and the other was holding a snack. The sweet smile on his little face was very endearing.
When the woman saw a customer coming in, she quickly stood up and said to Jack, “Sir, what would you like to buy?”
Jack looked around but didn’t see Tommy. He took out the letter from his pocket and said, “I’m not here to buy anything. I’m looking for someone. He’s my nephew. This is the letter he sent me. His full name is Tommy and his nickname is also Tommy.”
The woman looked Jack up and down and showed a happy expression. She said, “You must be Uncle Jack. I’ve heard Tommy talk about you. He’s sleeping in the back room. Wait a minute. I’ll go and call him.”
Jack watched as the woman shouted loudly towards the back, “Tommy, Tommy, Uncle Jack is here. Get up quickly. Uncle Jack is here.”
