Who’s Up to Mischief chapter 3
by Sarah JimenezIt’s Him
In the evening, two eye – catching square slogans were put up again.
As soon as it got dark, Tom Brown, Chief Sam, and the others sneaked into the hotel, chose a private room, turned off the lights, and stared intently, waiting for the right moment. At eleven o’clock, the hotel was completely quiet. The moonlight outside was hazy, and the target hadn’t appeared yet. Just as they were starting to doze off, they saw a dark figure staggering towards the government gate! This guy, emboldened by alcohol, had really fallen into the trap! The man reached the slogans, took a long time to steady himself, then bent down, stuck out his head, and started studying the slogans on the wall word by word, mumbling to himself.
Tom Brown was so excited that he rubbed his hands. Chief Sam whispered, “Don’t tip him off. We have to wait until he finishes his mischief before we catch him, so he can’t deny it!”
The group quietly crept behind a cypress tree in front of the hotel and crouched down. At this time, the target seemed to have read the slogans clearly and started cursing, “This Tom, what an idiot! He can’t even put up the slogans right! Useless!”
Hearing that he was being cursed at, Tom Brown was furious and was about to rush out, but Chief Sam grabbed him.
Tom Brown remembered that the left – hand slogan read, “Promote democracy and let the public be the masters!” The target mumbled the slogan and grumbled, “Nonsense!” He fumbled around for a while and then staggered to the right. The right – hand slogan said: “Resist corruption and let the officials be honest!” The drunk snorted and fumbled for a long time, then slapped the wall hard and read: “Promote corruption and let the public be honest!” Then he staggered back to the right, fussed around for a while, and read: “Resist democracy and let the officials be the masters!”
The evidence was irrefutable! Chief Sam waved his hand, and everyone immediately rushed forward. Tom Brown, who had been holding back his anger, kicked the man to the ground. Before Chief Sam and the others could pounce on him, the man just lay on the ground and started snoring. Chief Sam shone a flashlight on him, and everyone exclaimed in unison, “Mayor John!”
Chief Sam was stunned. Tom Brown suddenly understood that Mayor John seemed normal when he was sober, but when he was drunk, he had no idea what he was doing. By the next day when he sobered up, he would have completely forgotten what had happened the previous day! Tom Brown cursed himself for being so stupid. Why hadn’t he thought of it? The most miserable one was Chief Sam. He stood there, stunned – how was he going to report this tomorrow?
