The Son of a Farmer chapter 2
by Terry MoonOne day, a new student named Sam transferred to the class. He is tall and also has excellent academic performance. However, Sam’s father is a farmer. Just because of this, Jack and the other two boys look down on him. They often order Sam around. When someone doesn’t want to be on duty, they ask Sam to take their place. When someone is thirsty or hungry, they ask Sam to go and buy drinks and snacks. Even when they play basketball together, they ask Sam to carry their shoes and clothes. Sam is an honest and kind – hearted boy. He is very amiable and easy – going. As long as it’s not a matter of principle, he doesn’t care.
One Sunday, it happened to be Jack’s birthday. He planned to have a great time at Lakeview Reservoir, which is located north of the city. Jack suggested taking Sam with them. With Sam around, they could have an easier time. Tom and David thought it made sense and quickly invited Sam. So, the four boys set off excitedly towards Lakeview Reservoir.
Lakeview Reservoir is backed by the Rocky Mountains. The water surface is sparkling. The four boys rowed boats, took photos, and had a picnic in the reservoir. They had a great time. In the afternoon, when they left the reservoir, they didn’t want to go home. So they went to the forest at the foot of the Rocky Mountains to play hide – and – seek. The forest was so large that it was really exciting that three boys couldn’t find one!
Just as they were having a great time, Sam suddenly shouted, “Hey, come and have a look!” Everyone rushed over. It turned out that Sam had found a cave on the hillside of the forest. The cave sloped downward. There was a cold wind blowing from the entrance, and it was pitch – black inside. What kind of cave was it? The four boys guessed curiously. Some said it was a bear cave, and some said it was a badger’s den. Later, Tom got a bit impatient and said, “Hey, who cares what kind of cave it is. Stand still. I’ll take a photo of you and show it to our classmates tomorrow to scare them!” Unexpectedly, just as he picked up the camera and unscrewed the lens cap, his hand slipped, and the lens cap fell to the ground and rolled “gurgling” into the cave. Tom exclaimed, “Oh, my lens cap is very expensive. What should I do?”
All four boys were stunned! After a while, Jack rolled his eyes and said to Sam, “You go in and look for it. Maybe the cave is very shallow!” Sam looked at the dark cave entrance and hesitated, “I…” David interrupted him, “What ‘I’? Without the cap, the lens will get damaged!” Seeing that Tom was almost crying with anxiety, Sam thought for a moment, then bent down and groped his way into the cave.
A long time passed, and Sam still didn’t come out of the cave. Jack and the other two boys standing at the entrance began to get anxious. They shouted into the cave one after another, “Sam! Sam!” But apart from the echo, there was no other sound in the cave. The three boys panicked and just stared at each other, not knowing what to do.
Suddenly, a beam of flashlight light flashed in the cave. The three boys were so scared that they let out a scream. Sam had gone in with empty hands. What was going on? Just as they were puzzled, the flashlight light flashed a few more times in the cave, and then Sam’s “heave – ho” sounds came out, getting closer and louder with each sound. Finally, Sam came out, dragging a man out with him. The three boys saw that it was a foreign old man with blood on his head. He was unconscious.
Sam gasped for breath and said to Jack and the others, “Hurry, let’s take him to the hospital!” As he spoke, he took off his shirt and tore it into strips to bandage the old man’s wound. Jack and the others even forgot to ask about the lens cap. They helped the foreign old man onto Sam’s back. Then Tom led the way in front, and Jack and David supported on both sides. The group rushed to the reservoir management office. After explaining the situation, the person – in – charge of the management office quickly arranged a vehicle to send the old man to the hospital.
