Those Who Broke the Rules chapter 2
by Stephanie GonzalezThe Magical Beggar
Many days passed. David’s money in his pocket was getting less and less. He had no choice but to move to the cheapest motel and only eat two meals of bread every day. One day, he counted the money on him and found that he only had more than fifty dollars left. He felt very sad and thought that instead of suffering like this every day, he might as well spend the money happily and then figure out a way. With this in mind, he went out.
David wrapped his coat tightly and walked into a small restaurant near the motel. He ordered a bottle of wine and two plates of stir – fried dishes and slowly started to drink.
After a few sips of wine, he felt a little warmer inside, and the grief and indignation that had been suppressed in his heart also welled up. Taking advantage of the alcohol, he started to scold Tom. After an unknown amount of time, an old beggar with a pock – marked face appeared beside him. He was probably attracted by the smell of the wine and stared straight at the bottle. David was happy. Good, he had a drinking companion. So he ordered another bottle of wine for the old beggar.
The old beggar showed his yellow teeth and bowed his hands, saying, “Thank you.” Then he opened the bottle and poured the wine directly into his mouth. “Gulp, gulp,” he drank almost half of it in one go. Then he let out a long sigh and said, “I heard everything while I was beside you. You were cheated by that Tom, right?”
David sighed and said, “People can make all kinds of mistakes, but they can’t make the wrong friends.”
The old beggar quickly ate the food and drank the wine. Before long, the food and wine were all gone. Then he rubbed his belly and said, “Go and tell Tom to return the goods to you. Remember, say it’s from Brother Mott.”
David almost spat out his wine. Was this old beggar drunk? He pretended to be careful and said, “But I don’t know where Tom is!”
The old beggar threw him a note and said, “Just call this number.” Then he burped and staggered away.
David stared at his back for a long time. Suddenly, he came to his senses and opened the note. There was a mobile phone number on it. He took out his phone from his pocket and dialed the number. The call went through. Sure enough, it was Tom’s voice on the other end: “Hello, who is it?”
David was so angry that he couldn’t speak. It took him a long time to shout, “It’s me, David. Do you still remember me?”
Tom seemed very surprised. It took him a long time to say, “So it’s you. How did you get this number?”
“Don’t worry about how I got it. Tell you, return the goods to me quickly! Remember, it’s from Brother Mott!”
“Brother Mott? Which Brother Mott?” After saying this, Tom suddenly gasped and tentatively asked, “You mean Brother Mott?”
David emphasized his tone and said firmly, “Yes, it’s Brother Mott!”
On the other end, Tom immediately changed his attitude and said warmly, “Brother David, where are you now? I’ll come right away!”
Seeing Tom’s sudden change in attitude, David knew that Brother Mott had played a role. So he told Tom his location.
