Another thief breaks into the house chapter 2
by Joshua WallaceAfter hearing what Lily said, David quickly checked the doors and windows. As a result, he found that everything was normal. The doors and windows were locked, and there were no signs of the anti – theft net being pulled open or pried. This was strange. Did the money fly away by itself? David thought about it all day but couldn’t figure out how the money was lost. When he mentioned it again before going to bed at night, Lily suddenly slapped her thigh and said, “I don’t think the money was stolen by a thief. Think about it. If it was a thief, would he leave you 100 dollars?”
Her words hit the nail on the head. David was stunned. There were only three people in the house. Could it be the cousin? Once this thought popped up in David’s mind, it was like wild grass that couldn’t be held down. He knew that the cousin used to do business in the south. Later, he was cheated and owed a lot of debts, so he came out to work. The cousin used to be a boss and was used to spending money freely. Now that he had just started working, maybe… He didn’t dare to think further and decided to have a talk with the cousin.
At breakfast the next day, David pretended to be very casual and said to the cousin, “Since you’re staying at my house, I don’t treat you as an outsider. If you need anything, just say it. If you’re short of money, just tell me directly.” David emphasized the last sentence, and the intention was obvious. But the cousin just smiled and said, “You’re my cousin. Don’t you worry that I’ll be polite? I still have money to spend now. If I’m out of money, I’ll definitely ask you for it.”
Looking at the cousin’s expression when he spoke, David was not sure again and had to admit his bad luck. However, after that, David became more cautious. Every night before going to bed, he would move a chair in front of the bedroom door. If someone entered the bedroom, the chair would definitely move.
But this trick didn’t work for long. After a week, David’s money was missing again. This time, two out of three 100 – dollar bills were gone, and the chair in front of the bedroom door had also been moved! The bedroom window was closed tightly, and no one could get in. There was a bathroom in the bedroom, and David and Lily didn’t need to go out at night.
This time it was even clearer. The only suspect was the cousin. Lily was not only annoyed but also very tough. She gave David an ultimatum, asking him to drive the cousin away immediately. The reason was simple. Because of the hot weather, after the two of them were intimate at night, they hardly wore anything. If someone came in, even without turning on the light, they could be seen. How could she not be angry?
In fact, David was even more annoyed than Lily. In the morning, he thought the cousin’s eyes were full of ill – intent no matter how he looked at him. He was so angry that he didn’t even eat breakfast. However, after all, they were cousins, and David didn’t want to fall out with him. He went out and found someone to make an anonymous call to the cousin’s company, saying that the cousin had a habit of stealing.
Sure enough, within a few days, the cousin was fired by the company. Having lost his job, he had to go back to his hometown. After driving the cousin away, David thought that the money would no longer be missing. Who would have thought that after only ten days of peace, 800 dollars of the 1000 – dollar bonus he had just received disappeared without a trace!
This time, David not only felt heart – ache but also a little guilty. After the cousin left, David changed all the locks in the house. Obviously, the cousin didn’t take the money. He and Lily had wronged the cousin.
Then who stole the money? Now there were only two people in the house. David suspected that Lily was behind all this. When they first moved into the new house, Lily proposed that her parents come to stay for a while, and David agreed. But the cousin got there first, and Lily had been unhappy about it. He guessed that this was a dirty trick she came up with to drive the cousin away. But now that the cousin had left, why was she still secretly taking the money? David decided to find out.
That night, as soon as Lily came back, David asked her where the money was. Lily looked puzzled and said, “Money? What money?” David snorted and said, “What else could it be? The bonus I lost, 800 dollars in total. It’s my fault that I didn’t report it to you in time, but you shouldn’t just take it without saying a word!”
Only then did Lily understand what David meant. “You suspect that I took your bonus?” David said, “If you’re annoyed that my cousin is staying here, just say it clearly. Don’t play these tricks. How can I face my cousin when I go back to my hometown in the future?” As soon as he finished speaking, Lily burst into tears and called him a jerk. After scolding him, she packed her things and went back to her parents’ home.
Looking at how this matter had turned out, David also regretted it. But due to his pride, he didn’t go to find Lily for three consecutive days. On the third night, David was lying in bed, thinking about this matter. He tossed and turned and couldn’t fall asleep. Suddenly, he heard a “plop” sound coming from the bathroom. David was startled. He quickly got out of bed and ran into the bathroom. When he turned on the light, he saw a seven – or eight – year – old boy lying in the bathtub in the bathroom. David suddenly remembered that he had forgotten to drain the water after taking a bath last night. He suddenly realized that this kid was a thief! He climbed in through the ventilation window of the bathroom. Unexpectedly, there was water in the bathtub, and he slipped.
David had checked all the doors and windows in the house, and he had also specifically measured this ventilation window. He thought the window was too small for an ordinary adult to get through. But he never dreamed that the thief was a thin and small child. David quickly called the police.
At the police station, David asked the boy a question: “Why didn’t you steal all the money every time? You always left one or two hundred dollars.” The boy blinked his eyes and said, “Our boss said that when stealing, you can’t be too greedy. If you’re too greedy, you won’t be able to do it for long.”
At this time, the policeman beside him interjected, “Don’t believe his nonsense. If he wasn’t greedy, would he have stolen from you several times? Their trick has confused many people. Because they climbed in through the ventilation window, ordinary people won’t suspect it’s a thief. They not only don’t report the case, but also family members start to suspect each other. There have even been cases where people got divorced because of this.”
Unexpectedly, a trick by the thief could reveal the ugly side of human nature, making people even suspect the people closest to them. Thinking about his own actions, David couldn’t help breaking out in a cold sweat. He felt that the thief had given him a lesson!
