It smells good chapter 2
by Carol GibbsThe little boy wriggled his body and just wouldn’t take it. Jack said, “Uncle likes you, so this is specially for you. If you eat it, Uncle will be happy!” When the little boy heard what Jack said, his little face blossomed like a flower. He took the duck leg and gobbled it up.
After eating, the little boy smacked his lips. Jack asked him, “Do you still want to eat?”
The little boy shook his head and suddenly said something completely unexpected to Jack, “Uncle, the duck doesn’t taste as good as it smells!”
“How could you…” Jack’s face immediately fell. The business in the shop was already bad, and now after what the little boy said, he felt even more depressed.
The little boy was so scared that he disappeared without a trace. Jack stood there alone. After calming down and thinking carefully, he wondered: Could it be that the poor business in the shop was really because the taste of the ducks wasn’t good enough?
When his wife came back from her parents’ place, Jack told her about the little boy. His wife curled her lips and said, “Do you really take what a child says seriously?” But Jack wasn’t willing to let it go. He really picked up a duck leg and tasted it carefully. But because he had been eating the unsold ducks every day, he couldn’t tell whether the ducks tasted good or not.
The next day, Jack didn’t have the mood to blow the fan towards the street anymore. After thinking it over and over again, he felt that to do good business, he couldn’t just rely on the fan to spread the aroma. So he decided to close the shop for a few days. He visited all the roast duck shops in the city. When he came across a shop with good business, he reluctantly spent money to buy their ducks to taste, and then came back to try to mix the seasonings. Jack believed that the little boy wouldn’t tell lies, so he made him the first customer. Every time he tried out a new seasoning, he would let the little boy taste it first. Finally, his hard work paid off. The business in Jack’s roast duck shop got better and better day by day. Without the fan blowing, there was still a long queue at the door.
Two months later, one day, a woman came to the shop. As soon as she entered, she wanted to buy two roast ducks, saying that she was going to take them back for her son. The woman said that her son was the little boy who used to come to smell the ducks. Now he had gone back to the countryside to go to school and had been making a fuss at home, saying that he wanted to eat the ducks made by Uncle, and that the ducks in the countryside weren’t as fragrant as those here.
Jack was very happy when he heard what the woman said. He specially picked two roast ducks, wrapped them up, and handed them to the woman. Jack said, “These two ducks are for you. They’re free. Your son helped me a lot. I really have to thank him!”
The woman just wouldn’t accept it. She insisted on leaving $100 on the counter. She said to Jack, “My son has eaten a lot of your ducks for free before. This money is just a token. You must accept it anyway.” After saying that, she turned around and left.
Looking at the woman’s hasty back, Jack’s mind was full of the little boy’s figure. Because he really felt grateful to that child from the bottom of his heart. It was he who prompted Jack to do business with his heart, making the roast duck shop really emit an alluring aroma without the help of the fan.
